1 General Questions
1.1 Is everything you stock in the shop available on your website?

Unfortunately not. We carry many thousands of titles in our shop, not all of which are available on our website. We  will be continually adding titles to our website over time but recommend you visit us in person to see the full selection of our inventory.

1.2 Are all new releases available on your website?

Unfortunately not, dozens of new releases come out every week and we will list many of them on our website but not all. Some items we will only stock one copy of, never to restock once it sells, so a title like that will likely not appear on our website. Items on our website are titles we expect to sell in quantity and over a long period of time.

1.3 What makes Soundscapes unique?

Our shop is a reflection of our tastes and the tastes of our customers. As youngsters, we were fond of popular music, films and books since that was all we were exposed to. Over time, we realized there is a world of art beyond what is popular, and much of it is more thought-provoking, more edgy, more interesting, more influential, more inspiring and just plain better. As such we don't carry much in the way of popular titles (although we do carry some) but instead focus our efforts on the art created by the auteurs of the world.

1.4 Why should I buy from you when I can find it cheaper on Amazon?

A few reasons:

  • Amazon isn't always cheaper. In the early years, their unsustainable low prices drove their competition out of business. Over time, as they slowly accumulated monopoly power (they represent >50% of online commerce), they have been raising their prices. Of course the popular stuff is usually cheap on Amazon, but if you dig deeper into the Long Tail, which is the world we mostly inhabit, their prices are often not so cheap.
  • When you buy from us, you are supporting a local small business run by folks who live in your neighborhood (if you happen to live in Toronto). The profits we make stay in our community and don't flow to a head office far, far away.
  • You are supporting all the creators of the art we carry in our shop. We once hosted an in-store performance by local Toronto musician, Doug Paisley and during his performance he said something we'll never forget...that he was in awe of all the work that went into the art in our shop. And he was referring not just to the artists and auteurs whose name is on the record, film and book; he was referring to the folks behind the scenes...musicians, writers, directors, editors, producers, sound engineers, graphic designers, labels, studios, manufacturers, distributors, critics, and the last link in the chain, the retailer. Any glance at the credits of a film, the thank you's in the liner notes, or the back pages, will know that it takes a village to produce creative output and make it into a physical object. And since we carry the work of artists and auteurs who aren't necessarily on the best-selling charts, they could use your support.
1.5 Does it still make sense to buy physical media in the age of streaming?

Yes! We believe there is still value in physical media for the following reasons:

  • there are still titles missing on the streaming services, especially in film and music compilations
  • a well curated collection of your favorites to choose from is a panacea against the paralysis of infinite choice one is faced with when seeing a blank search field
  • as the saying goes "whatever you love, you are", there is nothing better to show off your excellent taste than a selection of books, films & music
  • you are supporting the creators who earn more on physical media than through streaming
  • there are some very nice deluxe packages being produced
  • for the artwork
  • you own something, which you can pass down to future generations or sell

There are probably other reasons we haven't thought of, but as you can see, there are still plenty of solid reasons to keep buying physical media!

1.6 Do you have any recomendations on what I should buy?

For sure, that's our reason for being! We have a Staff Picks section both in the store and on our website. The featured releases and categories on our home page and on the Features page are also full of things we love.

1.7 Do you have any tips on how best to search for items on your website?

Search can be a tricky thing and our search field is definitely quite particular (to our chagrin) and not quite as good as Google but here are some search tips to assist in the adventure.

1.8 Where are you located and what are your hours?

Check our About Us page for our hours, location, and directions to our shop.

1.9 A physical space allows me to see the big picture of your shop, is there an equivalent on your website?

Yes, there is a sitemap which details all the pages on our website which may be helpful in your browsing adventure.

1.10 How do I keep up to date on happenings in your shop?

In the future, we hope to launch a newsletter which you can sign up for now in our footer. We also have a section for News, and our RSS feed keeps you up to date on all new products added to the website.

1.11 What is your RSS feed?

If you use an RSS reader you may subscribe to our RSS feed and you will see all the new items we add to our website.

2 Gift Certificates
2.1 Do you sell gift certificates?

Yes. Our gift certificates are available for any amount you choose. They are payable by cash, debit or credit.

2.2 Do your gift certificates expire?

Our gift certificates do not have an expiry date.

2.3 Is it possible to use a gift certificate to purchase an item on your website?

Unfortunately, at this point in time, gift certificates may only be used for in-store purchases. We hope to offer this capability in the future.

2.4 Do I have to spend the gift certificate all at once?

No. A large gift certificate can be spent slowly over time. After each purchase we update the new balance. Our computer remembers the certificate number the next time you use it. If the remainder is a smaller amount (i.e. $5 or so), however, we'll give you the rest in cash.

2.5 What happens if I lose a gift certificate?

Unfortunately, a gift certificate is equivalent to cash and is usable by whomever possesses it. Please keep your certificate safe.

3 Special Orders
3.1 How do I place a special order

Due to the rather limited size of our shop, our inventory is quite small. However, through our suppliers we have access to hundreds of thousands of titles and are willing to place special orders for anything that is currently available. We pride ourselves on tracking down hard-to-find releases. To make the special order process as streamlined as possible please find out as much about the release as you can (artist, title, label, even catalog numbers if possible) in advance. However, even if you only know the artist, title, or song name we can still track almost anything down. Furthermore, we have many tools to help in the process, including up-to-date supplier catalogs and general knowledge of what's available. Special orders may be placed in person or over the phone; all we require is your name and contact information. We will call you when the special order arrives.

3.2 Is a deposit required for a special order?

No deposit is required for a special order. When your special order arrives we will give you a call to inform you. All you have to do is stop by the shop, ask at the counter for your order and pay for it.

3.3 Is there an extra charge for a special order?

There is no extra charge for special orders. The price you pay is the price it would be if we stocked the item on our shelves.

3.4 I haven't heard from you, what happened to my special order?

If you haven't heard from us, it is likely that we were unable to source your special order. Quite frequently, even when a title is listed as being available, it is in actual fact out-of-print. In that case, your best bet for finding the title might be in a used shop or a store that bought the title before it went out of print.

3.5 How long do I have to pick up my special order?

We will hold your special order for approximately six weeks before returning it to our supplier. We will call you immediately after your order arrives and then once more about three to four weeks later. If you have changed your mind about a special order, please call us so that we can cancel the order.

3.6 Is it possible to place a special order on your website?

Unfortunately not, our website only sells what is already listed on it. If you'd like to place a special order, please call or visit us in person.

4 Returns
4.1 What is your return policy for in-store purchases?

All items you purchase in our store, except for Magazines & Tickets, may be exchanged or returned for credit, within 30 days of purchase, if it's unopened or defective.

4.2 How do I return an unopened or defective item?

To return an unopen or defective item, simply bring it back to the shop with your receipt. We will issue a store credit that may be used immediately or in the future. For defective items, we ask that you confirm the defect on at least two players. Also, when you bring the defective item in for return please specify what type of defect and what time it occurs if applicable (for example, skip at 1:03 of track 3).

4.3 May I return a book?

Books are not sealed, but we will still do a return (i.e. bought as a gift when the recipient already owned it) as long as a few qualifications are met. The book should be returned within a couple weeks of purchase and must be in excellent shape.

4.4 How do I return a website purchase?

See our Shipping & Returns page for full details on returning a website purchase.
